The interior of the bar is based on the idea of being in a forest. Abstract tree trunks of concrete and steel, and simple focussed lighting create an intimate environment. Ceilings are a complex collection of fabric panels and timber doors from a Malvern house, which also conceal services and provide acoustic treatment.
Other internal finishes include formply, concrete, bluestone and parquetry for toughness and quality. Green leather, mirrors and stained timber veneers recall tram trips.
The external building line is now permeable, with lift up windows and fold back doors. A green terrazzo bench is testimony to Melbourne's fantastic café heritage. Marking the entry is a stained glass suspended bulkhead in the tradition of nearby church and pub windows.
Clearly this is not the architecture of minimalism, but it is still modern, cleanly detailed and robust.
